This project is the result of an enduring collaboration with Shubhra Raje Built Environments, a partnership that has grown and flourished over the years. It began as a Design Studio within the Master's Program at CEPT University, where an intriguing assignment emerged. From these modest beginnings, the project has evolved into a transformative architectural journey.

After finalizing the initial draft, the project achieved a significant milestone—it was chosen to be part of the prestigious Indian Pavilion at the London Design Biennale. This recognition not only showcased the project on a global platform but also highlighted its innovative and compelling nature.

The project's evolution has involved a continuous process of refinement and adaptation. As the initial design took shape, the project's scope expanded, opening up new possibilities for programmatic adjustments. The client's receptiveness to exploration has fostered dynamic discussions, allowing for the envisioning and fine-tuning of potential extensions . This readiness for change, growth, and potential future expansion underscores the project's adaptable nature.

The impending start of construction marks an exciting new phase for the project. What once existed as concepts and ideas is now on the brink of becoming a tangible reality.

BELOW, PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Even the most diminutive gardens possess an expansive allure, their profound age enriching them with an intangible grandeur. Such spaces resonate with the values accrued over time, embodying a patina of memories and stories that infuse the site with meaning and character. In these instances, architecture emerges as a steward, entrusted with the responsibility of preserving and enhancing the essence of these gardens.

Thus, when presented with the task of crafting a pavilion for events, celebrations, and gatherings in the midst of a bustling market street, we embraced the role of garden custodians. Situated within the heart of an unassuming town, one of India's myriad burgeoning locales transitioning from village to city, this pavilion was conceived to thrive for a limited decade before yielding to a more permanent function.

At its heart, the project commences with the garden-grove, an outdoor sanctum devoid of a traditional roof. Enclosed by boundary walls that just dip their toes into the realm of structure, this open expanse provides an inviting sense of "being within." Crafted from expanded steel mesh and enriched over time by the accumulation of fallen leaves, detritus, and compost, these embracing walls hold more than physical boundaries; they encapsulate the deeper narrative of the project.

Inscribed within the walls is a profound discourse on the act of nurturing a grove, crystallizing our stance towards landscapes, both natural and human-crafted. The wall, a formal expression of this ethos, not only defines the open room but also paints a vivid picture of our relationship with nature and the built environment.

The gate, a portal bridging the realm of interior and exterior, stands as the hallmark of balance. Scaled to invite habitation, it assumes the role of a pavilion, beckoning people and the refreshing crosscurrents into the heart of the garden. When shut, the gate provides sanctuary from the lively street, all while allowing the porch to serve as a window onto the garden's serenity—a promise of the tranquility that lies beyond.

With the gate ajar, the pavilion unfurls, extending the garden's embrace to the very street it borders. A tactile conduit that binds interior and exterior, it becomes a passage to shared experiences, connecting people and nature seamlessly. The pavilion stands as a testament to architecture's potential to transcend the confines of form, fostering a dialogue between the curated garden and the bustling street, merging the natural with the human-made.
